TIME WITH
SORAA GLASS

Meet Jark Pane the Korean-born, Tāmaki Makaurau based designer behind Soraa Glass. Her background in landscape architecture, spatial design and classical music inform her glass practice. We collaborated with Jark and textile designer Amy van Luijk to create a special textile print for Chapter 18 - The Joy.

MD What you like to fill your time with...

JP My mind is always developing the next project for Soraa Glass. There are pieces that I have been slowly working on for awhile and ideas of where I would like my practice to land. I love being in the studio because it gives me creative control and it satisfies my desire to make things physically with my hands. The rest of my time is filled with my incredible, beautiful  friends, my loving parents, eating food and going to experience art and recently more theatre - going to watch First Prime Time Asian Sitcom at Q theatre this weekend, very excited :)

Where do you find self-motivation...

JP
My motivation comes from the desire to contribute toward positive change here in Tāmaki Makaurau and hopefully Aotearoa and beyond. I am on a journey in educating myself, growing and also unlearning. Ultimately, to find those who share similar goals to help create strong foundations for women, for Asian women and for future creatives who also want to foster better relationships and growth. This desire is practiced in my day to day work whether that is my profession as a landscape architect or with Soraa Glass making commentary on our wider creative sector. I like working towards long term goals.

Unwinding method...

JP
I absolutely love a lazy morning in bed with a coffee. Those who know me well know I only do early starts for those I truly love. I like to relax and journal in bed looking out the window into my currently very lush garden. A night in or out with my girls is always great too.

Song on repeat...

JP
Nothing particularly new but 2 of my favourite summer sounds 1. I Go - DJ Koji remix Peggy Gou. This is a great morning hype song 2. Feels like Summer Childish Gambino. The intro on this is great and is a classic summer song for me.

Place you feel most grounded...

JP
In my bed, floating in the ocean or a really good and challenging hatha class.

Recent inspiring reads...

JP
My friend lent me Making Ways - Alternative architectural practice in Aotearoa by Mike Davis and Kathy Waghorn. I remember going to one of the occupancies at Objectspace back in 2020 and being very inspired by the ideas and discussions shared as it resonated with some of the unprecedented work we do in terms of regenerative design in the development sector. Revisiting this project in print and reflecting on the 'structural' barriers within our design discipline and discussions around creating novel knowledge relationships is so far, a good one. Also, for those who like to read with their ears, a great new podcast I've recently started to listen to is Dua Lipa : At your service.

A green tip...

JP
Recently for the first time in my adult life I've been storing my vegetables properly in the fridge so they last much longer and stay crisp and fresh. Honestly, so worth investing into.
